Many patients believe they are not good candidates for vision correction simply because they need reading correction and distance correction. This is not the case. Most people over the age of 40 experience a stiffening of the eye’s natural lens which causes difficulty focusing on objects both far and near. This condition is known as presbyopia and has been treated with reading glasses or bifocal lenses in the past. Now we have vision correction alternatives that offer certain patients the possibility of good functional vision for most of their daily activities, including reading.

PRELEX (Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery)
With this first type of vision correction, we replace the natural lens of the eye with an implant lens. The implant lens options include monofocal (lenses providing good distance vision in both eyes), monovision (one eye focused for distance and the other for near) and multifocal implant lenses providing each eye with both distant and near vision. Premium multifocal implant lenses offer the possibility of good functional vision at various visual distances. Dr. Bliss has been successfully implanting multifocal lenses in our patients for over a decade, and they are some of the happiest patients in our practice. The PRELEX surgery may allow a person who previously required distance and near correction to function with less or no dependence on spectacles or contact lenses.

Multifocal Intraocular Lenses
All of these lenses have shown in clinical studies to provide good near, intermediate and distance vision with increased independence from glasses in patients who have undergone multifocal implant surgery. We feel that it is important to pick the best procedure and not necessarily the first procedure when it comes to intra-ocular procedures, as they carry certain significant potential complications. At Bliss Eye Associates, multifocal implant lens have become the implant of choice for many of our patients considering cataract surgery and Refractive Lens Exchange. It is important to note that all types of presbyopia addressing implant lenses work best when they are implanted in both eyes. Dr Bliss will discuss the best options for your eyes.

ReSTOR ™ IOL

This implant lens is a second-generation refractive multifocal acrylic implant lens that provides patients with greater independence from glasses than monofocal IOLs. The ReZoom Lens has a patented optic design that works like a bifocal lens inside the eye. ReZoom also has the ability to consistently offer patients improved vision at a range of distances, from near to far and everything in between.

For more information about ReZoom, we have included a link to their web site.

One refractive lens is for distance, and the other one, a diffractive lens, is for near. ReSTOR is not dependent on the movement of the lens but has a unique Apodized Diffractive optic that is new to IOL design. Apodization is a gradual reduction or blending of the diffractive step heights. This unique technology optimally manages light energy delivered to the retina because it distributes the appropriate amount of light to near and distant focal points, regardless of the lighting situation.

The FDA approved the first “accommodative” IOL, the Crystalens, in November 2003. The Crystalens accommodating intraocular lens is engineered with a hinge designed to allow the optic, or part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth as you constantly change focus on images around you. The Crystalens functions quite differently than the ReSTOR and ReZoom lenses. The Crystalens moves and flexes within the eye allowing it to change power or accommodate. This lens allows clear vision at distance and intermediate, but objects at near distances may still be somewhat out of focus. The advantage of this lens is less night glare, and sharper contrast. But most patients still will need reading glasses for small print or if objects are close up.

In June 2008 the FDA approved Crystalens HD a 4th generation of the orginal Crystalens. The surface of the Crystalens HD has been shaped to enhance the depth of focus with a proprietary optical modification. The enhanced optic provides an increased depth of focus which is designed to improve near vision without compromising intermediate or distance vision. The HD lens does this without inducing increased undesirable dysphotopsia or night vision symptoms.

 MonoVision

The final option is Monovision Laser Vision Correction, an adaptation of the LASIK procedure. Monovision is a system where one eye is treated for distance vision. The other eye is left slightly nearsighted, which aids with reading. This system can be simulated with contact lenses allowing the patient to evaluate prior to making a surgical decision.

All vision correction procedures require a thorough evaluation and consultation in order to determine the best available solution for each individual eye. Safety is always our primary concern. Dr Bliss strives to provide the finest customized procedure for each individual eye.
