The eye works like a little camera. Cataract means that the lens of the camera has become cloudy producing a blurred or distorted picture. Some of the common symptoms of cataracts are increased difficulty with glare, halos around light, diminished color vision, and the need for frequent changes in prescription glasses.

During surgery to remove a cataract the cloudy lens is removed and is replaced with a clear intraocular lens. This clear implant lens provides a well-focused picture and a brighter view of the world. Dr Bliss performs cataract surgery using phacoemulsification. This is an advanced technique using ultrasound technology to gently dissolve and remove the cataract through a tiny opening that is only about 3 mm in size. Specially constructed incisions allow the natural pressure inside the eye to seal the opening without stitches in most cases. These techniques offer patients a comfortable recovery and rapid return of clear vision.

What is a Cataract?
With a clear normal lens, the images are focused clearly on the retina. Vision is clear. With a cataract, the lens is cloudy, causing the image to become blurred and yellowed. Vision is hazy and colors become faded.

How Cataracts Affect Vision
Shown is a normal, clear field of view as seen through the clear lens of the eye. When a cataract is present, your vision becomes darkened, cloudy, yellow and blurred. Difficulties with glare, trouble with night driving and problems reading are a few of the most common side effects patients experience with cataracts.

The Surgery

A very small "No Stitch" incision is made in the side of the cornea. Such an incision promotes fast and more comfortable recovery.

The bag of the lens is opened and a special ultrasonic probe (phacoemulsifier) removes the cloudy lens (cataract).

A small foldable artificial lens is inserted through the small incision to replace the cataract.

The final replacement lens is shown in place. It is not required to suture the small "No Stitch" incision.

Accomodative Implant Lenses

Treatment of Astigmatism
